About Us
Marine Diagnostics Ltd is an independent consultancy that specialises in used oil and petroleum analysis. We advocate the taking of good clean used oil and fuel samples.
Qualified independent laboratories analyse the samples then Marine Diagnostics interprets the results into detailed and easily understood personalised reports.
The reports also include recommendations on any further actions that may be required. Our reports are written in layman's terms so that not only can engineers understand them, but also the company director/manager or private owner of the equipment or vessel. In the seven years since we have been in business, Marine Diagnostics has used a standardised method for taking samples. The cleanliness and methodical procedures required when taking samples is central to providing a high quality interpretation of the results.
Note: A single oil analysis or sample is only a snapshot in time and will not provide the definitive answer as to whether a piece of equipment will fail in the days, months or years to come. This is where a good ongoing sampling and analysis programme becomes very important, as it can offer the trend analysis which is so essential to providing a full understanding of the equipment in question.
With the use of a good sampling method we are able to guarantee the quality of the results, good or bad. With the speed, accuracy and reliability of the laboratory and its results our aim is to provide you with the right answers at the right time.
Marine Diagnostics offers you one of the best opportunities available to find and rectify any potential engine, gearbox or hydraulic problem early. Our Used Oil analysis programme gives us the ability to view the internal workings of your equipment, and all without removing a bolt. Our reports and recommendations will provide you and/or your staff with the confidence that the equipment in question is either in good shape and reliable or has certain issues that may require some remedial action.
Marine Diagnostics also provides consultation, sampling, laboratory analysis, reports and recommendations on diesel fuel for its chemical and microbiological (Diesel Bug) make-up. These can include solutions to deal with any issues that may show up as a result of the laboratory analysis.
For over four years now Marine Diagnostics has provided sample kits, laboratory analysis, advice and recommendations to some of New Zealand's leading refrigeration and air-conditioning companies. This has enabled them to monitor the oil in large refrigeration racks around the country, particularly in the Foodtown, Countdown, Woolworths, New World and Pack n Save stores, as well as chiller plants in a large number of buildings across Auckland region.
Marine Diagnostics has also been involved in the analysis of cooling and cutting fluids in large metalworking systems. Large systems require regular monitoring to enable the coolant to provide optimum performance. For the last six years or so, Mobil Oil and APS Nuplex have employed Marine Diagnostics to take and analyse coolant samples from the systems of some of their leading customers, including the Ford Alloy Wheel Plant, NZ Steel and Industrial Tube. It is essential for the health of the system as well as the staff that a good analysis/monitoring and reporting programme is in place.
The main areas that Marine Diagnostics covers are:
Used oil analysis
- Engines (diesel mainly, but also petrol)
- Gearboxes
- Hydraulic systems
- Air conditioning chillers
- Large refrigeration systems
- Compressors
Diesel fuel
- Chemical analysis
- Microbiological testing (Diesel Bug)
Coolant
- Cooling and cutting fluids
- Engine coolants
Our standard service includes:

- Taking of one or several samples. (Engine/s and/or transmissions and hydraulic systems must be at their normal operating temperature before a sample can be drawn
- Laboratory analysis
- Reporting on the findings in a detailed and easily understood written report
- Providing recommendations on any actions required, including ongoing sampling programmes
Result and report times
Results are generally available within three working days of the samples being drawn. A further day is required before the detailed report can be released. Issues outside our control may slow this process down. Microbiological testing of fuel for Diesel Bug can take up to seven days, while coolant and cutting fluid analysis can be done on-site.
Used oil and fuel analysis results can be provided by phone as soon as they are available, if required.
