Chemical analysis of diesel
Diesel fuel can and is chemically analysed for a number of results. Either routine checking of fuel that has been supplied, particularly if it is a bulk shipment or it may be that you have a problem with a piece of equipment and/or believe that the fuel could be the cause or is contaminator in some way.
While Diesel Bug requires microbiological testing the cause or condition of the fuel that enable the bug to grow can be chemically analysed. If the fuel in your vessel contains water, particularly Free Water (water that is visible in the bottom of a tank, sample bottle or sight glass bowl) it can be tested to see whether it is salt or fresh water or a combination of both.
Other testing may include Cetane Rating, Flash point (particularly good if the diesel in contaminated with petrol or kerosene), Density and Water Percentage.
Chemical analysis of petrol
Analysis of petrol can be undertaken, but is not a specialist area of Marine Diagnostics Ltd. However, an area where we have been involved is determining the fuel-oil mixture ratios in 2-stoke oil. The results are very accurate and can assist in discovering the reasons behind an engine failure.
